Junior Newsletter - 12th July
Can you believe that we are so close to the end of term and the end of another academic year?? Where did the time go?
We have two more Junior Club Nights, this Friday and the following Friday 19th July which is our last Club Night for the term. Don’t forget that your membership includes access to the club at any time with your children. Check the social and events section on our website first though so that you can ensure you get a court or two. The ball machine is good fun with kids but do remember to take the yellow ramp with you to get the machine safely out of the clubhouse and onto the courts. I’m just wondering how they are getting wheelchairs onto trains down at the station since we’ve now got their ramp. Or maybe it’s a different one. Could have fooled me!
It has been a great week for tennis and I hope everyone has enjoyed watching Wimbledon. I was lucky enough to go to Wimbledon last weekend and saw Tim Henman and Scott Clayton putting juniors through their paces on an outside court. The juniors were the winners of the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ competition that we also ran here at the club. It was a great tennis session with funny commentary and background music. Such a great atmosphere. Have a look on the DLTSC Facebook page for a short video I took. Alternatively click on the following link:
We should definitely run a similar session at Dorking for our teenagers and most definitely encourage more of our juniors to enter the Road to Wimbledon competition next year!
Junior Club News
Well done to Izzy Barlow who won the U16 semi-final in the postal tennis trophy last Friday night winning 6-4, 0-6, 7-5. Izzy also won her U14 semi on Sunday winning 7-5, 6-2. What a superstar!
Good luck in the finals Izzy. Just keep doing what you’re doing as it’s working!
Monday 29th July to Friday 2nd August: Junior Open Tournament (formerly Audrey Hughes Tournament). This is almost the last call for entries to this brilliant tournament. There is a banner across West Street advertising it for the next couple of weeks so hopefully we will get some non-members entering, but it would be great to get more of our own juniors involved.
The organisers are looking forward to receiving your entries and ordering all the food for those tasty toasted sandwiches that are such a hit with the kids!
Summer Tennis Camps
Get your child’s name down for tennis camp over the summer. They are really popular and it’s a great opportunity to really improve their tennis. The details are in the attached flyer.
A quick mention about the Big Bash that took place last weekend. It’s the social event of the year for over-30s of Dorking (yes, there is an age restriction!) and was a great success yet again. Set up years ago by parents who missed ‘proper’ music festivals due to having small children and decided to have their own mini ‘one night only’ festival on their doorstep (well, in a field on the edge of town). The event has been running so long I suspect the organisers’ own children are now attending ‘proper’ festivals! Great to see so many club members strutting their stuff on the dance floor, although I must admit I didn’t recognise Vere immediately – nice fancy dress Vere. Blond curls suit you!
See you all on Friday at club night!
